To create a therapeutic environment for the families who seek help using systemic thinking and family therapy.

The Service

In Malta, most of the services that are offered to the family provide professional help on an individual basis. Systemic Thinking and Family Therapy looks at challenges within the system of relationships in which they occur, and aim to promote changes by intervening on the level of the family rather than on the individual alone.

Family Therapy provides the family members with the opportunity to meet together in the therapeutic context to work on their relationships with one another. Many times because of different circumstances, family members find it rather difficult to meet and discuss what they are going through. Families who have experienced Family Therapy, tell us that the fact that they sit together in the presence of the therapist provides them with an opportunity to discuss and explore different ways of looking at their situation and find a way forward.

Families will be seen either by a therapist working alone or have a therapist and a team. In the latter case, in addition to the therapist working with the family, there will be an observer observing the family and the therapist working together. The team is not there to judge the family but to help the family and the therapist to find ways of doing things differently by giving additional ideas.

At times, the team and the therapist may need to record the sessions in order to help the therapist and the team to think about the family in between the sessions. This is done with the service user's consent. The therapist will make sure that the tapes are kept confidential and in a secure place. No recording will take place without the family's consent.

Aims and Objectives

- To provide professional service to families using systemic principles.

- To provide on-going training in Family Therapy and Systemic Consultation to other professionals.

- To engage in research on Maltese families, Family Therapy and the Family Therapy Service Evaluation.
