The Community Services aim to support the existent specialised services. There are two important elements in this area - one that provides a long term generic social work intervention, either through a centralised service based at the Appogg premises by means of the Generic Services; or in the community, through Cottonera Community Services, Home-Start Malta, and Paulo Freire Institute.
The Generic Services are intended to support families, parents, children and other individuals at an early stage and in their own settings and communities, with the aim of preventing their situation from deteriorating and resulting in a crises.
The Cottonera Community Services are provided from ACCESS Community Resource Centre, located in Vittoriosa. ACCESS serves as a one-stop-shop to the Cottonera residents as it provides a wide array of services, including the Cottonera Community Services of Agenzija Appogg. This service focuses on community social work and community development by offering individual and family social work services as well as encouraging the community to participate in various knowledge-based activities.
Home-Start Malta is a service that has originated in the UK and has been offered in Malta since 2006, supported by Vodafone Malta Foundation and HSBC Malta Foundation. Trained volunteers provide practical help to parents with children of 5 years of age and under, in the localities of Cottonera, Zejtun, Zabbar and Fgura.
Appogg also offers a social work service at the Paulo Freire Institute, which is based in Zejtun and run by the Maltese Jesuits.
These type of services aim at strengthening community networks such that these too can be useful resources to support persons in need. Working in partnership with families and all other service providers or other local entities, the services aim at improving the quality of life of service users.
Appogg aims that through these services, persons who are in need of assistance, but whose presenting problems are of a more general nature, may also receive the desired service to enhance their quality of life and reduce the risks of social exclusion.
