Coff Blu ghall-Protezzjoni tat-Tfal
Tuesday, May 4, 2010

In 1989, Bonnie Finney tied a blue ribbon to her car’s aerial, in memory of her grandson Michael, who had just died at the hands of his abusive father. From then on, several countries mark Child Protection Day. The blue color of the ribbon symbolizes the color of bruises, that many children around the world bear because of the abuse they endure.

Locally, the Foundation for Social Welfare Services will be marking this day by a campaign aimed at promoting positive parenting as a way to prevent child abuse.  Providing children with a safe, secure family environment will help them grow up into confident, positive individuals insead of insecure, undisciplined people with low  self esteem, who might also then repeat the cycle of abuse.

The Blue Ribbon Campaign will focus on giving out tips and information to parents through several media. Wearing a blue ribbon shows one’s committmet towards protecting children and the will to spread the message abuse is never tolerated or justified.

An informative leaflet about positive parenting can be downloaded from here.

An informative booklet for children about abuse is available from here.
