14 professionals have recently been certified in a Diploma in Applied Systemic Therapy from the Tavistock Institute, London, during a certificate-giving ceremony held at Agenzija Appogg in G’Mangia. These students are all local professionals coming from various backgrounds and entities such Agenzija Sedqa and Agenzija Sapport within the Foundation for Social Welfare Services, Cana Movement, and other entities.

The certificates were awarded to the participants who successfully completed this course, by Yvonne Mallia, Operations Director Agenzija Appogg; and Dr. Angela Abela, Family Therapist, Psychologist and Director for the Centre for Family Studies at the University of Malta.

The Family Therapy Service of Agenzija Appogg has been in the forefront for the past 13 years, regularly organising these training courses in family therapy in collaboration with the Tavistock Institute, London. Lectures are delivered by local professional Family Therapists. Such courses represent the Foundation’s commitment to continuous training of staff and professionals.

The Tavistock Postgraduate Certificate and Diploma courses are aimed at psychologists, social workers, general practitioners, psychiatrists, guidance teachers, counsellors, psychotherapists and nurses. This training provides participants with new ways of understanding family dynamics with the aim of being better equipped in dealing with problems presented by individuals and families in different contexts such as school settings, general practice, and social work, amongst others.

Such courses are important as family psychotherapy and systemic practice is a specialized postgraduate field of therapy, and therefore such courses give the opportunity for professionals to gain a new language for therapy (including theory and practice) in working with individuals and families.  These courses also help in strengthening the profession by making it possible for successful diploma candidates to move on to a Masters programme in Family Therapy and Systemic Thinking.

The Appogg Family Therapy Service deals with situations varying from children with difficult and challenging behaviour which the family are not able to cope with, severe parent - teenage conflicts, to couples in crisis who want to safeguard their relationship, amongst others. Family therapy looks at the family/relationship dynamics which impact on the individuals that seek help, and therefore they do not end up carrying the sole burden of the problem. This approach gives importance to all the family members in relation to the problem and provides them with the opportunity to work together on their relationship with one another and overcome stumbling blocks together as a family.
