Progett Taghlim, another successful programme
Friday, July 2, 2010
33 volunteers yesterday evening were awarded a certificate of participation for their work and dedication with Progett Taghlim, an educational project coordinated by the the Appogg Cottonera Community Services, in collaboration with De La Salle College, ACCESS Community Resource Centre and the St Margaret College, which includes the participating primary schools in Cottonera.
Progett Taghlim is a homework support service which has been offered regularly since November 2002 to children, aiming to instill in pupils the right attitude towards their homework and education. Volunteers are an important asset of the project since they assist pupils mostly on a one-to-one basis in their homework, academic issues, and education through games and play. The idea of inquisitive learning is given extreme importance. This year’s volunteers came from various educational institutions, including De La Salle sixth form, University of Malta, and others entities. The sessions started in December 2009 and terminated by the end of May 2010, reaching a total of 72 pupils between Year 1 and Year 6 coming from the participating primary schools.
The project started off in Senglea by the Jesuits in collaboration with De La Salle College, but since then it has been extended to the other Cottonera localities by the Cottonera Community Team of Agenzija Appogg, giving also the opportunity to young people to experience voluntary work while further enhancing their strengths and abilities.
Progett Taghlim certificates were awarded by Ms. Catherine Fleri Soler, Services Manager, Agenzija Appogg, who thanked all the volunteers for their contribution, and all the stakeholders in the project for their collaboration. Ms. Marthese Romano, Community Worker, opened the Certficate Award Ceremony with a brief address to the volunteers present, while thanking also all the sponsors who gave their input during this year’s Progett Taghlim, on behalf of the Agency and the pupils. These include Toyland – for sponsoring part of the children’s toys that were presented to the children to recognise their efforts; MK leisure – for facilitating ice-skating experience for the volunteers free of charge; Paramount – for offering free transportation for volunteers; the National Council for Sports (Cottonera) – for a free day membership to all the volunteers to use its swimming and fitness facilities; and Cultel Ltd. – for providing an educational audio-guided cultural tour around Vittoriosa to the volunteers.
